94 Michael Bell is the recipient of the prestigious Eastern Region Supervisor of the Year Award presented by the National Art Education Association during its national convention held March 4, 2022, in New York City. While Michael is no longer teaching, having accepted a supervisor position in 2018 in Queen Anne’s County Public Schools in Maryland, he continues to champion teachers and is being recognized for his exemplary contributions to the field of visual arts education. He says he is beyond touched by the accolades he received when nominated for the award. “The thing that matters most to me about all this is that it came from ‘my teachers’ and the people who I respect greatly in our arts community. To have earned their trust, respect, and this honor is ‘winning’ on all levels, so sincerely, thank you!” 96 Craig Durie recently published a book about palliative medicine called “Speaking Human, A Journey in Palliative Medicine.” The goal behind the book was to demystify the specialty while also providing a framework for clinicians or families about to engage in complex decision making. The ongoing evolution and application of health sciences has recast humanity’s relationship with health and mortality. The transformative changes in medicine now exist in an environment of high speed and efficient care that frequently fails to slow down enough to fully appreciate the person, to speak human. Palliative medicine seeks not just to manage symptoms, but to do sense making and assist in navigating the On Dec. 18, 2021, Theta Chi brothers gathered for a mini reunion to celebrate their time together and show their support for fellow brother Andy Bieber, who was battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Sadly, Andy passed away on May 15, 2022. These stories traverse a journey into learning the skills necessary to provide this specialized care. In this book, Dr. Durie, a palliative care nurse practitioner, shares exemplar stories as tools, framing how to engage critically important conversations. The work spans 25 years of practice and captures the unforeseen challenges born from the COVID-19 pandemic. Honest, raw, and unfiltered, it is the author’s hope that fellow clinicians will borrow and tailor language for their own practice, and that readers not in healthcare might better understand what palliative care can offer. See page 22 for more details. 01 A design by Sara (Davern) Mika was selected for a public art installation as part of the “Superpower of You” health exhibit at the Bloomsburg Children’s Museum in Pennsylvania. Sara hand painted a 6’x10’ mural for the museum, which demonstrates healthy eating as well as how the portion size of an average American meal has expanded dramatically since the 1950s. The finished installation, unveiled on Oct. 8, 2021, hangs 9’ off the floor and is a permanent fixture at the museum for the foreseeable future.
