Sam Foreman’s ’10 love for art began at a young age, but with the help and guidance from an amazing high school art teacher, he was challenged to find himself through art. “I’ll never forget how Mr. Carlin let us experiment with melting glass in the kilns, and this opened my eyes to a whole new exciting medium. That freedom to explore, collaborate, and try new things hooked me on the possibilities of art.” Lycoming’s wide range of art programs gave Foreman the chance to try just about every medium and studio until he discovered his true passion. “The liberal arts path definitely remains relevant — it gives students the opportunity to explore diverse classes, studios, sciences, and more.” Foreman shares that his Lycoming art professors Seth Goodman and Howard Tran challenged him to think deeply about himself, the world we live in, and how art connects everything. “Their guidance really shaped how I approach both my art and teaching today.” Foreman, who teaches high school art classes, says, “Not to sound too cliché, but my favorite quote as an art educator is from Picasso: ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.’ That really resonates with me.” He also teaches glass to the general public, giving many people their first experience with the medium. “I love guiding students as they discover their own creative voices and seeing them be proud of their creations.” What he loves most about art is the process of creating something from nothing. “Taking a blank canvas, a lump of clay, or a molten goop of 2,000 degree glass and transforming it into something meaningful is incredibly rewarding,” he says. “Working with glass feels like a dance with the devil — it’s painfully hot, delicate, challenging, and beautiful all at once.” Foreman is in the process of starting a glass studio at his home studio. “Glass is such a fascinating medium. It transcends boundaries, existing somewhere between a liquid and a solid. Fragility and strength are amongst its greatest attributes. Despite its delicate appearance, it’s one of the strongest materials on earth, capable of withstanding the test of time,” he says. “I hope my pieces reflect that duality and leave a lasting impression, inviting viewers to see beauty in both vulnerability and endurance.” View more of his art on Instagram @samforeman_art. 40 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2025 SPRING MAGAZINE
