LYCOMING COLLEGE SPRING 2022 MAGAZINE

Committed to HELPING Future WARRIORS A first-generation college student, Donald Hughes ’72 was impressed by the caring attitude, personal attention, and focus on the individual during his initial visit to Lycoming College. He credits the small classes, fellow students, and learning experiences with the faculty for defining his positive college experience — one that colored the rest of his life. At Lycoming, Hughes developed a deep appreciation for his professors. “I respected them and was privileged to get to know them, and in many ways modeled my approach to adult life on those relationships,” he shares. His role as an early member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity greatly influenced his time at Lycoming as well. “I was in the first pledge class, became an officer and a big brother, and met a number of lifelong friends.” Today, Hughes continues to serve Lycoming as vice chair of the board of trustees. Finances were difficult for his family while a student, and that is why Hughes is committed to helping others achieve the same level of success he was afforded. He and his wife, Yvonne, have made several different types of gifts to Lycoming, including an endowed fund to aid the Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences to provide students with international study and internship opportunities, and the Wertz Scholarships to help as many students as possible realize a variety of experiences. The couple provides an annual scholarship and contributes to multiple building projects, most recently the new music facility. “Yvonne and her family are music lovers and really appreciate the College Choir. Contributing to the new building is a great way for us to support the music program and honor her family.” Members of the College’s Tower Society, the Hughes have included Lycoming in their wills as well. “Yvonne and I are not the only members of the Lycoming family whose future lives have been so positively influenced by our years in Williamsport,” he says. “I encourage my fellow alumni to consider the impact Lycoming has had on your families, careers, and lives, and seriously consider giving back for future generations of the Lycoming family so that others can be impacted in similar ways.” To learn more about including Lycoming College in your estate planning, contact Robb Dietrich, assistant vice president for major and planned gifts, at dietrich@lycoming.edu or 570-321-4401. I encourage my fellow alumni to consider the impact Lycoming has had on your families, careers, and lives.
