NEWS FACULTY & STAFF Amy Rogers ’92, Ph.D. , department chair and professor of education, recently co-authored two chapters in teacher education books related to Lycoming College's professional semester of student teaching and ensuring high-quality mentors for teacher candidates. The poem “Monk's Mood” by Sascha Feinstein, Ph.D. , Robert L. and Charlene Shangraw Professor of English, was translated into Chinese and published in 溫暖與酷:爵士詩選》新書發表 與黑膠聆賞會巡迴 [ Warm an' Cool: A Jazz Poetry Anthology ]. Feinstein’s essay, “My Father's Lasting Lessons on Art,” as well as photographs appeared in two catalogs that accompanied current shows of his father’s art in Philadelphia — “Sam Feinstein: The Early Years” at the Barbara Crawford Art Gallery and “Sam Feinstein: Immersive Abstraction” at the Woodmere Art Museum. Christopher Kulp, Ph.D. , chair and professor of physics, has co-authored a textbook titled “Classical Mechanics: A Computational Approach with Examples using Python and Mathematica.” The text presents the subject of classical mechanics alongside methods of numerical analysis to teach students how to use computers to solve problems in physics, especially complex problems which aren't easily solved by hand. Astrophysics-creative writing double major Maryam Esmat ’21 served as a student editor for the book, helping the authors with proofreading and providing feedback from a student’s point of view. “Faulkner & García Márquez,” co- edited by Andrew Leiter, Ph.D. , professor of English, and Christopher Rieger, has been published by Southeast Missouri State University Press and the Center for Faulkner Studies. The volume features the selected proceedings of the Faulkner and García Márquez Conference. Justin Lopez-Medina, Ph.D. , assistant professor of criminal justice, co-authored an article with Herbert Rodrigues, Ph.D., department of sociology and anthropology at Missouri State University, titled “Police legitimacy and procedural justice among Brazilian adolescents” that was accepted for publication in The British Journal of Criminology , the top-ranked journal in the field. The study tests the legal socialization theory by examining whether adolescent attitudes toward their parents and teachers explained later attitudes towards the police in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Jessica Munson, Ph.D. , associate professor of anthropology and archaeology, and Jonathan Scholnick, Ph.D. , instructor of anthropology and archaeology, have published a paper in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory entitled “Wealth and Well-being in an Ancient Maya Community: A Framework for Studying the Quality of Life in Past Societies.” Jacqueline Croteau ’17, Jazmin Jones ’20, Michaela Thode ’20, and Catherine McCarty ’21 contributed to the digitization and validation of data used in this study. Lycoming presented two faculty members with teaching awards during an outdoor, socially-distanced Honors Convocation ceremony on April 25. The 2021 Plankenhorn Alumni Award for Faculty Excellence was awarded to Jeff Newman, Ph.D. , professor of biology. Erin McCutcheon, Ph.D. , assistant professor of art history, was awarded the 2021 Junior Faculty Teaching Award. 29 www.lycoming.edu
