DONATION ENABLES PURCHASE OF $300,000 SPECTROMETER FOR RESEARCH Owing to the generosity of loyal alumni and faculty, Lycoming College has purchased an Agilent Liquid Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (LC/MS) at a cost of $300,000. The purchase of the LC/MS was made possible with a generous donation from a graduate, which the College advancement team was able to double through a matching incentive to facilitate the purchase. The new instrumentation is being utilized by faculty and students in the classroom, as well as for research and publication. LC/MS combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography with the mass analysis capabilities of mass spectrometry to perform tasks such as determining the molecular weight and molecular formula of known and unknown compounds. WARRIOR COFFEE SALES AND VIRTUAL TASTING EVENT DELIVER ECONOMIC RELIEF FOR FARMERS Lycoming College marked Oct. 1, International Coffee Day, as the jumping off point for a month-long celebration of coffee and fundraising to help sustain Warrior Coffee farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A virtual coffee tasting and increased contributions from sales helped to inject much-needed resources into Dominican communities so farmers can continue to safely tend coffee plants during the pandemic, rather than abandon farming in search of opportunities in crowded and distant metropolitan areas. The month-long effort to boost support for remote mountain farming families in the Dominican Republic saw Alabaster Coffee Roaster & Tea Co., located in Williamsport, Pa., increase its usual contribution to the Warrior Coffee Program, kicking in $5.25 for every bag of Warrior Gold and Warrior Blue sold on Alabaster’s website for the 31-day stretch. In addition, a virtual tasting, hosted by Caroline Payne, Ph.D., chair and associate professor of political science and director of the Warrior Coffee Project, and Brittney Gross ’18, former Warrior Coffee international development fellow and current roasting/production lead at Alabaster, introduced participants to two single-lot brews available exclusively through the event. “It is imperative that we respond to the pandemic and act quickly with emergency relief. The survival and success of our mountain-farming families not only helps ensure our investment in the enterprises that feed the supply chain, but also learning opportunities for students,” said Payne. “Perhaps most importantly is the immediate delivery of funds that helps us fulfill our moral obligation to responsibly maintain a relationship with these farmers.” Contributions are accepted at www.lycoming.edu/ helpwarriorcoffee.
