Sarah Silkey, Ph.D. , chair and professor of history, published a timely article in the Houston Chronicle which discusses the comparison of the recent wave of protests with the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Additionally, she was interviewed on WVIA’s “ArtScene” podcast about her research on Ida B. Wells, antilynching activism, and today’s protests, and published a related piece in the Washington Post’s “Made by History” series. Assistant professor of English Meghan Andrews, Ph.D. , published the article “How Marston Read His Merchant: Ruled Women and Structures of Circulation in The Dutch Courtesan ” in the journal Early Theatre . This piece argues that Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice influenced his contemporary John Marston’s The Dutch Courtesan in ways not previously recognized by critics. Taryn Bartholomew ’09 was appointed head of Library Systems and Collections in Snowden Library in July 2020. The following faculty have been granted emeriti status upon their retirements: Susan Beidler , Snowden Library (1975); Eugene Donati , corporate communications (2011); Kathryn Ryan, Ph.D. , psychology (1981); and Arthur Sterngold, Ph.D. , business administration (1988). Lycoming College extends its sincere gratitude to these individuals for their dedication and service to the College. Holly Bleam was appointed director of public safety in January 2020. Barbara Buedel, Ph.D. , professor of Spanish, has written an essay analyzing three plays. “El mal global: La enfermedad mental en el teatro de Diana de Paco, Teresa Calo y Angélica Liddell” was published by the University of Extremadura (Spain) in a peer- reviewed volume, La tradición cultural hispánica en una sociedad global . “Charlemagne’s Table: The Carolingian Royal Court and Food Culture,” written by Cullen Chandler, Ph.D. , professor of history and director of the Scholars Program, was published in Viator 50.1, the internationally recognized Medieval and Renaissance Studies journal sponsored by UCLA. The article represents some of the results of his research conducted during sabbatical leave in 2019 while holding the Donald Bullough Fellowship in Mediaeval History at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. In January 2020, Lakeisha Meyer, Ph.D. , was appointed assistant dean of academic services and director of the Academic Resource Center. She also serves as the coordinator of Disability Support Services. The 2020 Howard C. Berthold Faculty Research and Information Competencies Award, given annually to a faculty member who actively supports research competencies, was presented to Michael E. Heyes, Ph.D. , assistant professor of religion. Heyes published his monograph, “Margaret’s Monsters: Women, Identity, and the Life of St. Margaret in Medieval England (Routledge),” providing a look at St. Margaret of Antioch, the patron saint of childbirth and virgins. Justin Lopez-Medina, Ph.D. , assistant professor of criminal justice and criminology, Lori Patterson , director of career and professional development, and Detective Sergeant Christopher Kriner ’00, Old Lycoming Township Police Department, published an article “Maximizing the Benefits of College Interns: Practical Tips for Small Police Departments” in the April 2020 issue of Police Chief magazine. The recommendations draw from the close relationship between the department of criminal justice and criminology and local law enforcement agencies in placing students in practicums and internships. 20 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2020 PRESIDENT’S REPORT/FALL MAGAZINE
