Research by David Broussard, Ph.D. , assistant professor of biology, was published in Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeo- ecology , an international journal for original studies and comprehensive reviews in the field of palaeo- environmental geology. His article, “Depositional setting, taphonomy and geochronology of new fossil sites in the Catskill Formation (Upper Devonian) of north-central Pennsylvania, USA, including a new early tetrapod fossil,” discusses the paleontology, paleoecology, and sedimentology of recently discovered Late Devonian Catskill Formation fossil sites in north-central Pennsylvania, including a new record of an early tetrapod femur. “Carolingian Catalonia: Politics, Culture, and Identity in an Imperial Province, 778–987,” written by Cullen Chandler, Ph.D. , associate professor of history and director of the Scholars Program, was published in January 2019 by Cambridge University Press. Drawing on a range of evidence related to royal authority, political events, and literate culture, this study traces how kings and emperors involved themselves in the affairs of the Spanish March and examines how actively people in Catalonia participated in politics centered on the royal court. In 1950, Sam Feinstein created a black-and-white documentary about the legendary abstract expressionist Hans Hofmann, a film that eventually debuted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For that movie, Hofmann painted “The Window,” which became part of the museum’s permanent collection. Sascha Feinstein, Ph.D. , professor of creative writing, spent hours interviewing his father about his years with Hofmann, and then edited the text for publication. “Understanding Hans Hofmann” was released by Provincetown Arts Press in July 2018 and represents one of the most accurate and profound portraits of this revered painter and teacher. It is also the winning entry for the photography/art category at the 2018 New England Book Festival. Amy Golahny, Ph.D. , professor of art history, participated in two highly competitive overseas conferences this past summer. She presented "Gagliarda and its implications for Rembrandt and the Ruffo Commission" at the Historians of Netherlandish Art Conference in Ghent, Belgium, and later "Poe and the Visual Arts" at the International Poe and Hawthorne Conference in Kyoto, Japan. Young Sascha Feinstein on the shoulders of his father, Sam Feinstein, with Hans Hofmann smiling back Sarah Holstein, Ph.D. , assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience, attended the 48th annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego, Calif., in November 2018 where she presented a poster entitled, “Caffeine Increases the Reinforcing Efficacy of Sweetened Alcohol Solution.” The poster was co- authored by Gillian Barkell ’19, Angela Cardillo ’20, Logan Gregory ’21, and Megan McVeety ’18. During the conference, Holstein also led an information session on finding a job at a primarily undergraduate institution as part of her work as councilor on the executive board of the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN). 30 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2019 SPRING MAGAZINE
