2018 FALL LC MAGAZINE

2 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2018 FALL MAGAZINE tudents are our raison d’etre. Educating minds, broadening horizons, cultivating leaders — we challenge our students to think deeply and act boldly. We aim to change lives so that our graduates can make a difference in the world. Attracting the best and brightest students to attend Lycoming College is a core element of our mission, and offering both a cutting-edge and traditional liberal arts and sciences program taught by a highly engaged faculty is a key to success. We are excited about the curricular innovation that has taken place in recent years, particularly the creation of the Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences, which focuses on global education, internships, and student-faculty research collaboration. This Center harnesses the power of experiential knowledge by providing students with the opportunity to deepen their learning and expand their skillsets by testing ideas and applying concepts beyond the physical boundaries of the campus. Recognizing that students build leadership and other skills through student life programs, we introduced the new Outdoor Leadership & Education co-curricular program. Enhancing leadership skills has become a more intentional focus of athletics, fraternity and sorority life, student government, and campus programs as well. This work includes a high impact leadership experience at the Gettysburg battlefield that is held twice a year. Curricular innovation has also included new majors and minors that respond to student demand and promise an even greater competitive edge as our students enter the workforce. In this issue of LC Magazine , we highlight the College’s exciting efforts in STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math. You’ll read about the new biochemistry major that will launch this fall, about the research we are conducting in neuroscience and physics, and how we are having fun with math; you’ll meet our incoming S-STEM student scholars; and you’ll catch up with some of our alumni who studied STEM at Lycoming and have pursued careers in STEM fields.
