CON LITERATURE.THEATRE.ART Rene Gortat ’12 ene Gortat ’12 always made things as a child. Whether playing with LEGO, drawing, or taking apart toys, he was fascinated with the process of making and with how things work. It was not until his first year at Lycoming, though, that he started taking artwork seriously. The dual major in art (painting) and philosophy, with a minor in literature, says he would paint into the night, build things, and make a mess. “The art building became my home.” Gortat says he aims to create pieces that are what they aim to convey. For example, his fleece piece series is based on the basic human need for connection. The pieces are inspired by baby blankets, hence the soft fabric. “The Radiator” represents a longing for stability, home, and ultimately warmth. The “Men Working On” screen prints are based on the classic road sign and showcase a new theme in his practice that considers the importance of mental health and wellbeing. His art and creative process varies from piece to piece and project to project. “It used to be more haphazard, but with time, I have learned to write down ideas in detail and categorize them in a binder. This system helps to make the abstract more concrete.” Gortat says his Polish immigrant background and family history greatly inform his art practice. “My upbringing provides a unique yet relatable point of view. These days, I find myself using art to work through challenging life questions and family histories, and also as an escape from the chaotic New York City life.” Gortat is a co-owner of Leerform, a fabrication and design company that works with the New York City art community.
