Matt Ulrich ’03 is an artist fascinated by sacred geometry, creating one-of-a-kind, symmetrical folk art paintings from repeating sacred geometry patterns. He uses scrap pieces of wood for many of his canvases and finds inspiration by trying to fit custom designs within given spaces to make the pieces flow. “I will paint a canvas with any leftover paint I have, which sets the color pallet for the piece.” In Spring 2022, Ulrich was given the opportunity to display a solo show in Katonah, N.Y., at the CB Gallery. “I had to back into 22 new paintings for the show. I was working on three to four at a time while paint was drying, trying to keep the momentum going. Lots of small sketches and constant drawing to complete the paintings. The show was up for a month, and it sold out!” Shifting gears from folk art, Ulrich collaborated with Joe Feerrar ’02, owner of Bald Birds Brewing Company. “Joe and I were friends in college, and I was excited when he reached out to see if I would create labels for his upcoming beers.” Some labels included lettering and patterns, while others were the “Dazed and Confused” characters depicted as emus. “We had a lot of fun coming up with designs, but the labels were second to the amazing beer Joe brews.” When not creating art, Ulrich is an engineering and maintenance director for GID/Windsor, a multifamily real estate investment trust where he manages the company’s assets for New York City, New Jersey, and Chicago.
