His impact will continue for generations through the gifts that he secured in support of the mission of the College.” – President Kent Trachte Lycoming College is saddened to share news of the passing of Dale Bower ’59 (1930-2021). A native of Williamsport, Dale was a graduate of the Williamsport Area High School and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He received his bachelor degree from Lycoming College in 1959 and a Masters of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary 1962. In 1968, Dale returned to Lycoming as the first director of alumni affairs, a role he held for 15 years until his promotion to a newly created position of director of planned giving in 1982. His leadership and service helped to establish the alumni and advancement functions at the College, including the creation of the Tower Society in 1987, which continues to celebrate and recognize those who have included Lycoming in their estate plans. The Dale V. Bower Service Award was established in 1979 in his honor, with Dale being the inaugural recipient. The award is given annually to recognize an individual for outstanding service rendered to the College. Upon his retirement in 1998, Lycoming conferred on him the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, recognizing his many years of trailblazing and exemplary service to the College. His family, friends, and colleagues knew him as a compassionate, unselfish, and dedicated individual who cared for others as much as he cared for his Warrior alma mater. From grilling hot dogs at football games and transporting students around town, to passing out programs and assisting guests at commencement ceremonies, Dale was always willing to lend a hand. Dale is survived by two sons, Rodney and Robert, and seven grandchildren. The love of his life and college sweetheart, Mary (Hoffman) Bower ’60, whom he married in 1960, passed away shortly after Dale on Oct. 25, 2021. The couple were preceded in death by sons David and Daniel. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the McIver Endowed Professorship at Lycoming College.
