06 Matthew Parrish , publishing under the pen name K. Uwe Dunn, had 10 essays accepted for publication by literary journals, four in print and six online, in 2019. He also was nominated for The Puschcart Prize twice, once by The Petigru Review for “Stanley’s Postscript” Derek Crane ’06 , Ph.D., is an assistant professor of biology at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina. His research addresses issues related to ecology, conservation, and management of fishes and their habitats. He, along with his graduate student, Garrett Herigan, have most recently been awarded more than $60,000 in grants to support their research of the sandhills chub, a local fish found only in the Sandhills region of North and South Carolina. Since the sandhills chub has a limited geographic region where it can survive, it makes them uncommon, so their conservation is a priority. The goal of this project is to assess sandhills chub populations in South Carolina, identify environmental and biological features associated with healthy populations and depleted or extirpated populations, and develop a predictive model to guide sandhills chub conservation and restoration. Additionally, Crane has received multiple grants and contracts totaling more than $263,000 during the past several months to support research related to fisheries and fish conservation. “I love my job; mentoring young people and future environmental stewards through teaching and research, and working with collaborators to address questions related to fish conservation and management is very rewarding, but it takes continuous dedication and a willingness to creatively overcome challenges,” he said. Crane attributes his time spent at Lycoming and his experience as a student-athlete on the wrestling team with helping him to overcome those challenges today. “Athletics, and wrestling in particular, can be stressful yet very rewarding. Experiencing the challenges and rewards of training and competing with a group of peers is something that I thoroughly enjoyed. Wrestling also made me a better student because it forced me to develop good time-management skills. I had to use my time efficiently to be able to successfully complete my academic assignments, while working out multiple times a day during most of the academic year. Coach Crebs instills the values of commitment and hard work in his athletes, and these values are also what are required to be successful as a scientist and teacher.” How wrestling contributed to a successful career in fish conservation and once by Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art for “Daniel, You Are Above Ground.” In September, Fairmont State University in Fairmont, W.Va., invited him as a visiting artist to read his work and give advice to writing students. 08 Katherine (Rupprecht) married Ryan Angst on May 10, 2019, in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
