INVESTING IN DIVISION III STUDENT-ATHLETES Glenn Smith II ’07 Director of Athletics Development & Warrior Club Assistant Athletic Director smithg@lycoming.edu athletics.lycoming.edu What do all of these organizations have in common? Each one is being influenced by the work of a former Lycoming student-athlete. Whether it’s banking/finance, education, non-profit work, government service, entertainment, healthcare, or a myriad of other industries, Lycoming’s former athletes draw on their experiences to lead and shape organizations, contribute to their community and family life, and impact circles of people in tremendous ways on a regular basis. We use the word experience often when talking about athletics and the Warrior Club because experience is a recognized distinction. An athlete’s experience as a part of a team contributes to their education through the lessons learned, relationships formed, and moments that turn into cherished memories. Likewise, these experiences differentiate a candidate in the job market and cause a graduate/medical school applicant to stand out. It is a quality that indicates someone’s capabilities and it is an invaluable tool that supports a person’s aspirations of success and greatness. Lycoming delivers a nationally recognized education and is committed to using experiential learning to develop students intellectually, professionally, and personally. The Warrior Club exists to strengthen these learning opportunities in the area of athletics and does so by engaging alumni, parents, and fans in ways that maximize the support of Lycoming’s 17 athletic programs. Since 2015, the Warrior Club has received 4,195 gifts totaling over $920,000 in support and has hosted 22 events that have engaged 995 guests through team reunions, post-game tailgates, and the Senior Athlete Celebration. During that time, Warrior Club funds have been used to strengthen recruiting efforts, upgrade athletic facilities, recognize achievements, and support international travel for our teams. Furthermore, the funds have reduced the out-of-pocket expenses for student-athletes who need specialized equipment to compete and have provided for leadership development and training initiatives for our teams. Today, the strongest athletic programs are accompanied by a support base that is investing in the overall experience of its athletes. At Lycoming, we are working to recruit exceptional talent that will help us compete with the very best in our conference and in the NCAA. The athletic experience that we deliver to those athletes strengthens our ability to attract the best student-athletes and ultimately produces the strongest graduates. The Warrior Club and its members invest in the development of Lycoming’s student-athletes — athletes who will one day be leading, shaping, and contributing to their industry, family, and community. I treasured my time as a student-athlete at Lycoming. I learned how to compete at a high level and how to lead a diverse group of people. I learned how to mitigate the highs and lows of success and adversity to remain focused on advancing our team. I was afforded opportunities that taught me about self-sacrifice, communication, and the value of friendship. For me, like many past and present Warriors, the experience of playing a sport at Lycoming has been one of the greatest influences in my life. Thank you for supporting Lycoming athletics!
