Lycoming College 2020 President's Report/Magazine
Building a community amid pre-semester quarantine I mask up out of respect for all of the medical workers who have given up so much time to keep everyone safe. - Luke Jordan ’22 During the month of July, the State of Pennsylvania strongly recommended a 14-day quarantine for travelers arriving from about 20 different states. In response, Lycoming created an opportunity for nearly 100 students, including international students, to come to Williamsport and complete a 14-day quarantine prior to the start of classes. The College is pleased that none of the quarantined students developed symptoms that required a diagnostic test. The students were quarantined in accommodations at Little League International in South Williamsport. While in quarantine, the students were presented with a myriad of daily virtual events to not only help pass the time, but to build a sense of community in this strange new setting. The most popular events included a game night with Quizzo! and painting kits provided by Wine & Design in Williamsport, which culminated with an online Art Expo. Other events included the Art of Origami, Personal Finance, and a Warrior Coffee Tasting. Students even maximized this quarantine time to work on their resumés and apply online for on-campus jobs. The College is grateful for the 17 faculty and staff who volunteered their talents and time to help create meaningful moments during this unique return to campus. As part of a Warrior Strong initiative, alumni are encouraged to refer a job or internship opportunity within their networks. Lycoming graduates are entering the workforce during one of the most challenging economic climates. Some students who had confirmed employment plans are re-entering the job market due to hiring freezes, company bankruptcy, and general uncertainty within companies. Alumni connections can positively impact the life of a young person, and this initiative has already resulted in a hire of a recent graduate. In response to the Warrior Strong initiative and in recognition of the financial strain the pandemic is having on many Lycoming students and the impact those financial challenges will have on the College’s operations, Art ’59 and Joanne Haberberger have generously committed up to $100,000 in matching funds to encourage gifts to Lycoming that will address the most critical needs created by this unprecedented time. With a goal of raising $500,000 that Lycoming can use immediately to support students, donations made by individuals who have not made a gift to the College in the last year or more will be eligible for a 25 percent match. Gifts may be designated to the Student Retention Fund, the Lycoming Fund, and scholarships. Make a gift by June 30, 2021, at www.lycoming.edu/warrior-strong-match. Together, we are Warrior Strong .
