2019 LYCOMING COLLEGE LC MAGAZINE SPRING
THY FOOD RECOVERY NETWORK Lycoming College’s Food Recovery Network (FRN) fights starvation and food waste alongside the American Rescue Workers (ARW) in Williamsport. FRN volunteers visit the campus dining hall to package, weigh, and deliver uneaten food to the ARW. Since its inception in 2014, the FRN has salvaged nearly 39,000 pounds of food, with 4,510 pounds of that total recovered last year alone. “American Rescue Workers is incredibly grateful for the tens of thousands of pounds of food that Lycoming College students have brought to our kitchen,” says Valerie Fessler, community engagement and development officer for ARW. “Each pound of food served makes a difference in the lives of those who are food insecure by providing them with delicious, high- quality food, and greatly impacts our budget by cutting food costs.” STUDENT AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP BY THE GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE SERVICE One of twenty-five students from the United States and Canada to receive an undergraduate scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD), Shelby Civils ’20 is spending the year studying abroad in Germany. Her highly competitive scholarship gives students access to the best study and research opportunities available, all while sparking interest in Germany, its culture, and its language. The scholarship offers several other benefits to Civils, including a stipend for travel, healthcare coverage for the duration of her time abroad, and exposure to German culture. “This is a very competitive scholarship, but I’m not surprised that Shelby’s application and qualifications impressed the selection committee,” said Len Cagle, Ph.D., assistant professor of German. “Shelby intends to pursue graduate study in German Studies, for which significant time in a German-speaking country is an essential prerequisite. I’m looking forward to seeing the results of her year abroad when she returns to Lycoming.” FRN is recognized as an integral component of the College’s Sustainability Committee. A recipient of the Outstanding Community Service Organization prize and the PERC Campus Sustainability Champion in both 2014 and 2018, FRN contributes largely to the Sustainability Committee’s community service initiatives. 9 www.lycoming.edu
