CON L I T E R A T U R E . T H E A T R E . A R T Carrie Firman ’05 is associate professor of graphic design at Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., where she teaches a range of courses including typography, video, web design, layout, concept development, and senior capstones for portfolio development and internship experience. “I enjoy having a variety of job responsibilities which allow me to have a personal impact on students as individuals as well as the college as a whole,” she said. I create art and design projects in several media that seek to illuminate the aesthetics in my mind’s eye, as well as the ways it augments my cognition and memory. This piece is from an ongoing photographic project called ‘That Which Cannot Be Said With Words,’ aiming to express the fleeting, abstract nature of synesthetic visualizations. – Firman Want to be featured here? Alumni are encouraged to share their recent works of literature, theatre, art, music, and film to be considered for future publication by contacting marketing@lycoming.edu . Firman’s primary body of work is based on her experience of synesthesia — a consistent, involuntary combining of sensory modalities. She explained this perceptual phenomenon takes many forms and is entirely unique to each individual. Some associate colors or personality with letters, others shape and color with sound. Emotions, days of the week, concepts, smells, and many more perceptions can be involved. Inspired by her study abroad experience as a student at Lycoming, travel also greatly influences her work. “My many trips and the exploring attached to them allows me the valuable opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and to learn about the land, people, history, and traditions.” Learn more about Firman’s work, including her upcoming sabbatical project involving the Northern Lights in Norway, at carriecfirman.com. 48 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2019 FALL MAGAZINE
