“Closing Time” by Semisonic some other beginning’s end. g of a new adventure COMMENCEMENT Lycoming celebrated its 171st annual commencement on May 11, 2019. Graduates followed the footprints of tradition with a procession through the Oliver Sterling Metzler Gate and onto the Fultz Quadrangle where family and friends awaited them in the beautiful, sunny weather. More than 260 bachelors’ of arts and sciences degrees were awarded. The Class of 2019 greeting was delivered by senior class representative Olivia Heckroth ’19, a dual major in creative writing and corporate communications. She began by thanking all those who work on Lycoming’s campus, from her professors to those who make sure she had a safe path to walk to class during snow storms. She also touched on the importance of asking questions, something she said Cullen Chandler, Ph.D., professor of history and director of the Scholars Program, instilled in her during her first week of classes. “No one is equipped with the right answers from the start, but part of finding success is recognizing that,” she recalled. “Success is hidden behind a wall of questions, and better questions, and even better questions, and all of that is accessible to each and every one of us.” Steven P. Johnson ’76, President of UPMC Susquehanna, delivered the commencement address. Maintaining strong ties to the community throughout his career, Johnson is currently the vice- chairman of the Little League Baseball International Board of Directors and locally serves on the boards of Pennsylvania College of Technology, the Williamsport Lycoming Economic and Community Development Corporation, and the regional advisory board for M&T Bank. Johnson, along with influential community leader Charline Pulizzi, president of Labels by Pulizzi, received honorary degrees during the ceremony. Pulizzi’s generosity with the College and her service on its Institute for Management Studies Board of Visitors has positively impacted the campus and its students for decades.
