2018 FALL LC MAGAZINE

37 www.lycoming.edu Senior Week Lycoming College seniors enjoyed a week full of events leading up to graduation, including a day in downtown Williamsport, a happy hour with faculty, an outdoor adventure, a food truck festival, and a picnic on the Fultz Quadrangle. Members of the senior class who donated $50 toward their class gift also attended a donor champagne brunch in the Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall with President Kent Trachte, Ph.D. Senior Class Gift Seniors chose to raise funds for the installation of an outdoor fire pit to be placed on the Upper Quad near the future Krapf Gateway Center. With a goal of $15,000, the seniors raised a total of $16,282. Trachte and his wife, Dr. Sharon Trachte, contributed a generous gift of $5,000 toward this project. In addition to their fundraising goal, the Class of 2018 hoped to see a 60 percent participation level among their peers, and they were able to achieve 62 percent. The dedication of the fire pit will take place during Homecoming & Family Weekend 2019. Members of the 2018 Senior Class Gift Committee were Melanie Gehringer ’18, president; Gabriella Quintard ’18, vice president; Lindsay Smith ’18, treasurer; and Alicia Skeath ’18, secretary. Commencement At the conclusion of Senior Week, Lycoming College celebrated its 170th annual commencement on May 12, 2018. Despite the rain, graduates made the time-honored march through the Oliver Sterling Metzler Gate and onto the soggy Quad, where family and friends awaited them. Graduates then processed with faculty into the Keiper Recreation Center for the ceremony, and a reception for all to celebrate together concluded in Lamade Gymnasium. Senior class representative Ericka Booker ’18, a Spanish major with a minor in human services, delivered a greeting from the Class of 2018. She welcomed guests in both English and Spanish and spoke about how Lycoming’s diverse student body provides opportunities to learn more about the world, reminding us that “our actions, whether they be small or large, can have a ripple effect on the communities around us.” Academy Award winner Tom Woodruff Jr. ’80, special effects artist, actor, director, and producer, gave the keynote address. Woodruff’s most notable works include “Death Becomes Her,” last year’s “IT,” “Annabelle: Creation,” and the Netflix feature, “Bright.” Coming this year will be “Sorry to Bother You,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” and “The Predator.” Woodruff, along with Don Francis, president of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, received honorary degrees during the ceremony.
