30 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2018 FALL MAGAZINE Cullen Chandler, Ph.D. , associate professor of history and department chair, has been named the Donald Bullough Fellow in Mediaeval History by the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. The residential fellowship will allow Chandler to spend the 2019 spring semester abroad working in the St. Andrews Institute for Mediaeval Studies on his research project, “Early Medieval Food and Culture.” “Living in the Story” documents thirty-five years of art making by the distinguished photographic artist Patrick Ryoichi Nagatani, one of the most brilliant photographic artists of our era. The documentary, which has gained international attention, is directed by Lynn Estomin , professor of digital art and design. It has been screened at the Society for Photographic Education Annual Conference in Philadelphia, the Courthouse Theatre at Anthology Film Archives in New York City, the Cinalfama Lisbon International Film Awards in Lisbon, Portugal, the University of New Mexico Art Museum in Albuquerque, and the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe. The film has also been selected as a semi-finalist for best feature documentary at the Los Angeles CineFest. A panel of industry judges will select the winning films to be screened in Los Angeles in January 2019. The film trailer can be viewed at www.patricknagatanilivinginthestory.com. Amanda Gunderson, D.M.A. , assistant professor of music, is the recipient of the American Music Teacher Article of the Year Award for her article, “The Well-Crafted Question: Inspiring Students to Connect, Create, and Think Critically,” published in American Music Teacher in May 2017. She was recognized at the Music Teachers National Association 2018 National Conference held at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Florida. Lycoming College was pleased to recognize two faculty members for their excellence in teaching during Honors Convocation held on April 22, 2018. The Junior Faculty Teaching Award, for those in their first 10 years of teaching, was presented to Michael Kurtz, Ph.D. , assistant professor of economics. The Plankenhorn Alumni Award for Faculty Excellence for a senior faculty member was presented to Darby Lewes, Ph.D. , professor of English. Charles Mahler, Ph.D. , associate professor of chemistry and assistant dean for teaching effectiveness, received the Joseph Priestley Service Award of the Susquehanna Valley Section of the American Chemical Society on May 2, 2018. Mahler was honored for running the section’s annual high school chemistry exams and serving as its education chair since 2012. The Candela Gallery displayed work by Andreas Rentsch , assistant professor of art, at the Association of International Photography Art Dealers at Pier 94 in New York City in April 2018.
