BUILDING COMMUNITY Angela Huggler and Charles Lamade practice together at UPMC Susquehanna Health OB/GYN. “Since we are both locals, I feel it enables us to talk more easily with patients about the community and all it has to offer,” said Huggler. “Having these things in common with each other and our patients strengthens the bond we share and gives us plenty to talk about in regards to life outside of work.” Lamade agrees. “There is a certain comfort in practicing with someone who shares a heritage of not only being fellow alumni, but also having grown up in the Williamsport area,” he said. “Dr. Huggler and I have seen Williamsport change and grow and have a better understanding of the local character and needs of people with whom we’ve grown up.” Angela (Bohr) Huggler ’03 (biology) “I enjoy my profession because it allows me to be a part of others’ lives at important turning points — childbirth, surgery, etc. I enjoy educating patients about their conditions and treatments. I also enjoy the variety I have — office work, OR, labor and delivery, on- call. I am particularly excited about minimally invasive and robotic surgery. I first looked at Lycoming as a result of sports recruitment, but ultimately chose it because of the strong science programs, small town environment, and proximity to my home. Lycoming provided me a well-balanced education, not only within my major, but also outside of it. I felt prepared and confident in each step I took following graduation.” Charles Lamade ’75 (psychology) “The charm of being an obstetrician and gynecologist comes from helping others, particularly at this stage of my career, working with fertility issues. A physician’s work should be felt as a calling, in which we use the talents and training given to us in the service of others. While I took all the biology, chemistry, and other requirements for pre-med, I was a psychology major at Lycoming. This latter course of study tremendously helped prepare me in trying to understand and help with the emotional aspects of a medical career. There was nothing, however, that I enjoyed more than the math courses I took at Lycoming — fascinating, fun, and wonderfully taught!” Elissa Totin ’97 (biology) “I am the nature center supervisor for the Croydon Creek Nature Center in Rockville, Md. I enjoy the variety of work that I do, which includes everything from conservation projects to curriculum development to budget management. What I love most is the fact that I have the opportunity to help people make a connection to nature, whether it’s helping parents and toddlers play in nature or explaining the impacts of climate change to school-aged children. At Lycoming, I developed critical thinking and communication skills, but what truly helped were the mentoring relationships that I developed with my professors. As an undergrad, I was selected for a summer field research expedition in South America, which put me on the path to graduate school at the University of Georgia where I earned a master’s degree in plant biology and discovered my love of informal science education.” Funkhouse Photography 24 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2018 FALL MAGAZINE
