2018 FALL LC MAGAZINE
Angeline King ’22 Hometown: Cooperstown, Pa. Anticipated major: biology “I have always had an interest in biology and how different aspects of life all interact and coexist. I plan to major in biology and take the anatomy and physiology track during my time at Lycoming. After graduation, I want to attend medical school with the hopes of becoming a pediatrician. While visiting Lycoming, I was able to meet many of the professors and students. Every person I met seemed to really love the College, and I felt at home at Lycoming.” Living and Matthew Velardi ’22 Hometown: Bartonsville, Pa. Anticipated majors: physics and math “When I first watched ‘The Land Before Time’ around the age of three, I was immediately obsessed with dinosaurs. When I ran out of dinosaur books in the school library, I moved on to physics, and have only sparingly looked back. I plan to study physics and mathematics because, to quote Einstein, ‘I want to know how God created this world.’ After graduation, I intend to pursue a Ph.D. in physics. With this, I hope to become a professor and research Loop Quantum Gravity.” Courtney Ahnert ’22 Hometown: Lebanon, Pa. Anticipated major: astrophysics “I first became interested in STEM when I was a young child after I read a variety of books about astronomy and biology, and that pretty much solidified my interest in science. I plan to study astrophysics because I am really interested in space and discovering previously unknown aspects of it, especially exoplanets. After I graduate from Lycoming, I intend to get my Ph.D. in astrophysics and work for NASA.” Lycoming College is pleased to introduce its first incoming class of S-STEM scholars for fall 2018. The College was awarded a $548,915 grant by the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program to support a new initiative: Living and Learning STEM (L 2 S). L 2 S was designed to attract and support academically talented undergraduate students pursuing degrees in astronomy, physics, neuroscience, actuarial science, biology, chemistry, or mathematics with a traditional liberal arts and sciences education. Lycoming’s incoming Class of 2022 L 2 S scholars will be awarded competitive scholarships for each of their four years at the College. S-STEM SCHOLARS 18 LYCOMING COLLEGE 2018 FALL MAGAZINE
