9 SPECIAL EDUCATION PK-12 REQUIRED COURSES Students seeking certification to teach under the Special Education certification should, as soon as possible, consult with the education department faculty and make their intentions known to their major department advisor so all requirements can be met before the Professional Student Teaching Semester. Please work closely with your major advisor and your education advisor to ensure that all required courses in both areas are completed. Course Requirements: A. Complete a Major: Students must complete a major in one of the following areas according to the requirements established by Lycoming College and the academic departments. Psychology BA, History, Sociology, OR Spanish. Other majors can be possible depending on each individual student’s course needs. B. Take the additional certification requirements: Education Program Core Courses: EDUC 215 and 225 (each 2 credits and taken in the same semester) EDUC 348 (non-credit: taken the semester prior to student teaching; $525 lab fee) SPLED 230 and 334 PSY 110 and 120 ENGL 106 or 107 and an ENGL literature At least 6 credits of MATH numbered 101 or above. Specific Certification Area Courses: Special Education Certification Grades PK-12 ECED 340 (spring only) SPLED 243 (spring only), 338 (spring only) (or ECED 344 fall only) SPLED 320 (spring only even years) and SPLED 331 (Spring only odd years) Major area courses The Professional Semester (16 Credits) EDUC 461 Methods of Classroom Management (1 credit) EDUC 462 Principles and Applications of PK–12 Assessment (1 credit) EDUC 465 Professional Semester of Student Teaching (8 credits) SPLED 447 Professional Development for the Inclusive Setting (6 credits)
